Use cases: Fleet, fuel & rideshare

Your own fleet cards and driver payouts

Give every driver or vehicle a fleet card with its own budget, and pay drivers onto a card after each trip or load, through one API.

Your drivers carry someone else's card

Many fleet software, freight and delivery platforms refer their customers to an outside fuel card. That card carries another company's name, and its controls and spend data live in that company's portal instead of your product. Meanwhile, drivers on ride-hail and delivery apps wait for earnings to reach a bank account, and owner-operators often pay for fuel before a load pays them.

With Moon, your platform launches its own card program through one API. Issue a fleet card per driver or vehicle for fuel, tolls, maintenance and EV charging, give each one a monthly budget and limit it to the merchant categories you choose. Every swipe is checked against those limits as it happens, and with real-time authorization enabled for your program, your system makes the call against the budget in your own ledger.

The second program pays the people who drive. Load a driver's earnings onto a card in your brand after each trip, or advance fuel money to a carrier before a haul. Both run beside the fuel card and payout options you offer today, and your platform keeps the brand and the spend data.

What you can do

  1. 01

    A card for every vehicle

Issue a physical card for the pump or a virtual card in your driver app, one per truck, van or driver. Each card spends only its own monthly budget.

  2. 02

    Tolls, repairs and EV charging

Cover the spend beyond fuel on the same card, limited to the merchant categories you allow, so a fleet card is declined at an electronics store.

  3. 03

A balance for each fleet customer

Fleet software can keep each customer's money in its own balance, so one fleet's cards never draw on another fleet's funds.

  4. 04

    Driver payout cards

Load ride-hail and delivery earnings onto a card in your brand after each trip or shift, for drivers who choose to be paid that way.

  5. 05

    Fuel advances for owner-operators

Put fuel money on a carrier's card when they accept a load, limited to fuel, and net it out of the load payment in your own system.

  6. 06

    Lost or stolen cards

Freeze a card from your app as soon as a driver reports it missing, then issue a replacement with the same budget.

Why fleet and driver platforms choose Moon

  • Your brand, your spend data

The card carries your name, and every purchase and decline reaches your system by webhook, with daily reconciliation files to match. Fleet customers manage spend in your product, not in another provider's portal.

  • Budgets checked on every swipe

Set a monthly limit per card or per driver, and limit cards to fuel, tolls and the other categories you allow. With real-time authorization enabled for your program, your system approves each swipe against the budget in your own ledger.

  • Earnings loaded after each trip

Move pay from your prepaid balance onto a driver's card when a trip or load closes. Requests take an idempotency key, so a retried payout is never paid twice.

  • Discounts for your drivers

Reward safe driving and on-time deliveries with discounts of up to 10% at major brands, paid from the same prepaid balance that funds your cards.

Questions

Does this replace our current fuel card provider?
No. You launch your own card program beside it and move customers over at your own pace. Start with one group, such as new fleet customers or owner-operators, and keep the existing card for everyone else.
How do pump pre-authorizations work with a budget?
Pay-at-the-pump terminals place a temporary hold on the card before fuelling starts, and the hold can be larger than the fill-up. It is adjusted to the final amount after the purchase. Keep each card's budget and balance above the usual hold so drivers are not declined at the pump, and watch decline webhooks for limit reasons.
Can our fleet card come with fuel discounts?
Moon is the issuing layer: it issues the cards, applies your limits and reports every transaction. Fuel discounts are deals with fuel merchants, which your platform can arrange directly. Separately, your platform can offer drivers discounts of up to 10% at major brands through Moon.
How do we limit card sharing and skimming?
Give each driver or vehicle its own card, so a shared or copied card can only spend that card's budget. Limit cards to fuel and the other merchant categories you allow, and use decline webhooks to spot repeated attempts at the wrong merchants. Freeze a card from your app when something looks wrong; if the budget is set on the driver rather than the card, the replacement card falls under the same monthly limit.
Can drivers in the US be paid on the card?
Yes, as an option drivers choose. Offer the payout card next to the payout methods you already have, and let each driver pick. Drivers can verify their identity through a hosted link from your app before their card is issued, and you set the cardholder fees, which can be zero.
Where can we launch, and which licenses do we need?
Card programs can launch in the US, Latin America and Southeast Asia. Cards are issued by Moon's partner financial institutions under their licenses, so you don't need a card-issuing license of your own. You can start with a pilot on a few vehicles: the Sandbox has the same endpoints as production, so you can issue cards for test vehicles, set budgets and simulate fill-ups to see the approvals, declines and webhooks your platform will handle.
